FAQs

  • Is there an age requirement for adopting?
Adopters must be at least 21 years old.
  • I found a dog I really like. What do I do next?
Great! The first step is filling out an application on our website. From there, you’ll receive a call for a phone interview to learn a little more about you and schedule a meet and greet.
  • How much is the adoption fee?
$500 for adult dogs, $650 for puppies.
  • What does my adoption fee pay for?
All dogs are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and microchipped. The adoption fee also contributes to our other dogs still in foster care.
  • What is Seniors for Seniors?
We waive 50% of the adoption fee for adopters aged 65 and older who get a senior dog (over the age of 8). We can also include a month’s supply of dog food.
  • Do you offer discounted rates?
Other than our Seniors for Seniors program, we do not offer discounted rates.
  • Once I apply, how long does it take to hear back?
After submitting an application, you’ll receive a call back within 24 hours. If an application is received before 7 PM PST, you’ll receive a call back the same day.
  • Will my dog be microchipped?
    Yes, all dogs are microchipped.
  • Do you have an Adoption Event where I can meet your dogs?
We have Adoption Events at Petco in West Hollywood, located at 508 N. Doheny Drive, every other Saturday from 2-5 PM. Look on our home page for more exact dates.
  • Can I adopt if I live outside the LA area?
Yes, absolutely. You are still required to apply, interview, and have a house check. If you are far from the area, house checks can be done virtually, via FaceTime or Zoom. We do not ship or transport dogs, so once you are approved for the dog of your choice, you must be able to pick them up and take them home.
  • Can I apply for multiple dogs?
Of course! If you’d like to adopt multiple dogs or if you have interest in meeting a few, please list each dog’s name on your application and we’ll be happy to introduce you to each of them.
  • Do you do home visits?
Yes, each adopter must have a home visit before they are approved to take a dog home.
  • What happens at the meet and greet?
You’ll have the opportunity to meet with the dog you’re interested in as well as their foster. You’ll spend time with the dog, play, walk, and ask questions about the dog’s personality and how they are in the home. Take all the time you need to really get to know the dog and see if they feel like the right match for you.
  • What supplies will I need for my new pet?
Every pet parent needs the basics to make sure their dog is happy and set up for success in their new home. We require the following supplies before a dog can go home on an adoption trial: bed, leash, collar with tags, toys, treats and chewables, and human-grade or fresh food.
  • Is my adoption fee tax deductible?
Absolutely. You’ll receive a tax receipt with your adoption packet.
  • What is the process to be able to foster dogs?
Thank you for wanting to foster! Since we’re entirely foster-based, we rely on loving fosters in order to be able to save more dogs. If you’d like to foster, please fill out our application. After the phone interview is completed, we ask for a video recording of your home so we can have a good idea of where the dog will be living while in foster care. Once this is received and approved, we can set you up with a dog.
  • Can I pick the dog I want to foster?
Unfortunately, no. Since we rescue dogs from high-kill shelters and all of our dogs are in foster homes, we need a secure place for a dog to go immediately. When we reach out to our fosters, we let you know which dog(s) we have in need along with any details and information we have about the dog. If you are able to accommodate that dog, then we arrange for the dog’s pickup.
  • What is the time commitment to foster?
We ask fosters for a minimum of 4 weeks. This makes it easier on the dogs so that they have a secure and reliable home, even for a few weeks, while a permanent home is found. Of course, if you cannot do 4 weeks, but can do 2 weeks or even a few days, please reach out! Emergency fosters are also crucial as there are plenty of occasions where we’ve learned of a dog in urgent need of a home for just a few days. We are happy to work with fosters who have any range of availability.
  • Who pays for my foster's food, bed, and medical needs?
Ace of Hearts covers the costs of all of your foster dog’s needs while in our care. As a foster, you will be provided with a bed, leash, collar, toys, treats, and food. We resupply all food, treats, and other necessary items every 2 weeks at our adoption events. We also cover the costs of their wellness exams, spays/neuters, and necessary follow up vet visits or specialist exams.
  • Can I foster and decide later that I want to adopt the dog?
Sure thing. We have lots of loving fosters who become so enamored with their pooch that they can’t bear to let go of them! If you decide you want to adopt the dog you’re fostering, you’ll just need to complete the same steps of filling out an application and completing a house check.
  • What volunteer opportunities do you have?
We have plenty of volunteer opportunities! If you’d like to help out in-person and meet some of the dogs, we always need volunteer help at our Petco adoption events We also need doggy chefs who can help make nutritious homemade food that we can distribute to our dogs. Other volunteering opportunities include being a standby/emergency volunteer and a Freedom Rider. Our Freedom Riders are the saviors who get dogs out of the shelters for us, giving them their first true taste of freedom! And as a standby volunteer, we ask if you can be on call at any times throughout the week in case of emergencies.
  • Can my child volunteer?
Yes, but they will need to have an adult with them at all times to supervise. Our minimum age for volunteering without an adult is 18.
  • Do I need experience to volunteer?
No experience is needed to be a volunteer.
